A potem ruszyła lawina.

Bo to brzmi elitarnie.

Powiedzieli ostatnie słowa i zamknęli ten rozdział.

By złapać tę chwilę, która opowie historię.

Wanderers ~ Drifters ~ Runaways “The Road Home”

Let me tell you a story.

In 2014, a release titled “When the Rain Started Falling Forever” came out. It was Sars, who decided to switch from the train Duszę Wypuścił to the Wanderers ~ Drifters ~ Runaways line. Did he know where the journey was headed? Or was he like the Beatniks? Irrelevant. What matters is that the release became a sensation. The one who had seen it all – Chaosvault – graciously nodded his hand and said: take this, all of you. And then the avalanche began.

The full-length releases “The World Doesn’t Give a Fuck” and “Seafaring on Dry Land” drove people absolutely crazy. Vinyl copies of these albums were impossible to get. It was easier and cheaper to buy Peste Noire and Black Magic SS. Hell, it took three different labels to put out the CD version of “The World Doesn’t Give a Fuck”. That’s how much weight this thing carried.

Sars brought Post-Punk back to the world. Bands started appearing like visions after Parkopan.

The greatest Polish Internet Music Experts began boasting about their knowledge of supposedly forgotten post-punk projects from Finland such as Motelli Skronkle, Sielun Veljet and Keuhkot. Why Finland in particular? Because it sounds fucking elitist. And because RYM told them so. The reviewers had finally collected enough terminology in their little pockets to throw around when describing WTZ’s music. So they could sound clever and well-listened. And everything was going just fine for them and everyone else.

Until the band released “Berliner Vulkan”.

And everything fucking blew up.

Sars, Stawrogin and Dominik (lyrics) took a trip through electronic music in the spirit of the eighties. Panic broke out.

Audiophiles on forums for Old Audiophiles (basically elektroda.pl, only with even more shitting on amateurs) started writing tearful posts asking about settings and gear. They didn’t want to be left high and dry with the rest of the crap masquerading as music listeners.

Shock. Human tragedy. Fluctuations in sesame prices. And the political crisis that followed in Myanmar.

Shit was happening.

It was then that the gentlemen – Sars and Stawrogin – while staying in the Slovak mountains (according to an interview with KnockOut – “The End of the Bumming”) decided to go back home.

To end the adventure. To quiet the noise surrounding them. To cut themselves off from such a significant influence on the world.

They recorded an album that is everything WTZ had been up to that point, and at the same time isn’t.

A summation of a fascination with their work that was incomprehensible even to them. Something essentially peripheral to the things they were digging into on a daily basis.

They said their final words and closed that chapter.

They left their fans behind – hooligans, always loyal! – with nothing but emptiness.

Yes, I’m going to tell you a story that never happened.

I don’t quite know why Wanderers ~ Drifters ~ Runaways never gained greater recognition. Recognition measured by a number somewhat higher than, say, the middle of the table in Poland’s top-flight metal league.

They deserved it.

Or perhaps that was precisely their glass ceiling?

One more thing before the end.

Do you know the concept of the decisive moment in photography associated with Bresson? In simple terms, you need to know when to press the shutter. To capture that one moment that tells the story.

You know, the perfect photograph.

I often wondered what matters more in that moment. What the photographer feels? Or what emotions will be delivered to the viewers? And a third thing: can the person looking at the photograph imagine what that moment felt like for the person taking it?

I tend to think: not really.

And – I’m finally getting to the point – I think it’s somewhat the same with the lyrics on “The Return Home”.

I get the impression that the three wanderers are having a fucking great time with them, because they know what happened, how it happened and at what exact moment it came into existence (there’s also an article in Dwutygodnik and the story of how the lyrics to “How to Burn Down a Village” came about).

But what is the listener supposed to do with all of that?

That’s their problem.

And that, too, is where the strength of this release lies.

The lights are out.
